🛠️ Step-by-Step Guide to Safely Georeferencing Point Clouds in Revit

🚧Challenges with Georeferencing in Revit Inserting a point cloud with coordinate systems in Revit can sometimes be tricky. Even when using the "Auto - By Shared Coordinates" option, Revit may insert the data incorrectly. This often occurs when the coordinate system exceeds 100,000 meters easting and northing. Despite these challenges, there is a reliable method to achieve accurate georeferencing in Revit.

Prepare Your Point Cloud in AutoCAD

Start by creating a grid for the area of your point cloud in AutoCAD. Alternatively, you can use two known points to align the project, but this guide will demonstrate the grid method.

Insert the Point Cloud:

  • Open a new project in AutoCAD.
  • Go to the ribbon in the top left and select "Insert".
  • Go to "External References." If you don't see the point cloud option, click the small arrow icon in the top left and select "Attach Point Cloud."
  • Find and open your point cloud file.
  • Use default parameters to ensure the point cloud is correctly positioned(refer to the image for specific settings).

Create a Grid Using Lisp:

  • If you want to create a grid for your point cloud area, use a Lisp routine like DRAWGRID. If you need this Lisp, contact info@cadbimsurveys.com.

Import the Grid into Revit

Open a New Project in Revit:

  • Go to the Project Browser, find the floor plan named "Site," and open it.

Import the Grid:

  • On the "Site" view, go to the ribbon and select "Insert," then "Link CAD."
  • Locate your CAD grid file and import it using the following parameters (refer to the image for specific settings).
  • Double-click the scroll wheel to zoom to the extent of the grid, ensuring it is inserted in relative coordinates.

Georeference the Project

Specify Coordinates:

  • With the grid inserted, go to "Manage" > "Coordinates" > "Specify Coordinates at Point."
  • Select a grid line on the north axis and input the corresponding coordinate. Ensure your units match (e.g., add three zeros if your project is in millimeters).
  • Repeat the process for an east grid line.

 Verify Coordinates:

  • To ensure accuracy, go to "Annotate" and select "Spot Coordinate." Check different grid lines to confirm the coordinates are correct.

Insert the Point Cloud:

  • Go to "Insert" > "Point Cloud."
  • In the popup window, locate your point cloud file. Select "Auto - By Shared Coordinates" and click "Open."

Confirm the Insertion:

  • When prompted with messages, select "Yes."

Conclusion

Georeferencing point clouds in Revit requires careful attention to detail to ensure accuracy and avoid common mistake. By following this guide, you can safely and effectively georeference your point clouds, ensuring precise alignment with real-world coordinates. This process not only enhances the accuracy of your BIM models but also facilitates better integration with GIS and other geospatial tools, ultimately leading to more successful project outcomes.
